I presented at AIA’s “You’ve Got 5 Minutes”, an event organized by the Architecture Matters committee at AIA Dallas with the intent of initiating a dialogue that challenges and advances the conventional nature of thinking and practice. Past installments focused on sustainability, young professionals and urbanity. This most recent installment focused on continuing the discussion of the principles of well-being discussed in the fall 2014 edition of Columns magazine. Ideas like the importance of engaging people, using art, quantifying architectural decisions and reemphasizing natural factors like light were reiterated by all eight speakers including Denton Wilson – MHD, Bobby Vance – Perkins and Will, Andrew Strum – Freelancer, Anita Moran – Dewberry Architects, Michael Macgregor – PBK, Paul Merill – 5g studio, Susan Hubenthal – Freelancer and myself. I specifically emphasized on bringing together the innovative thought of users and the practical knowledge of architects, urban planners, policy makers, ecologists and environmentalists to create a built environment that nurtures well-being.
